Difficulty: Easy ★★☆☆☆
Pick a design and choose which system you have. (3DS templates will also fit older Nintendo DS systems and the 3DS XL templates will fit the *New* 3DS XL)
3DS | 3DS XL 3DS | 3DS XL
Materials you wil need:
- One of the templates
- Felt in various colours
- Embroidery floss in a complementary/ corresponding colour to your felt
- A sewing needle
- Scissors good for cutting paper
- Scissors good for cutting fabric
- A pencil/ pen and/or chalk/ a white pencil crayon
- Hot/ fabric glue
- A craft knife (optional)
- Thread (optional)
- Fabric paint (optional)
First you'll want to print out the template in the correct size for the design you want to make. Then you can cut out the rectangle.
Next, take your piece of felt in the colour you want the main body of the sleeve to be in, and trace the rectangle on to it twice so that you have a piece for both sides. If your felt is in a darker colour, we recommend you use white chalk or a white pencil crayon so that your lines show up. Then cut out your rectangles. (If you are making the pokeball, follow the instructions on the template)
Taking your template, begin to cut out the design. Some of the designs will have multiple steps, work your way from the outside of the largest shape, inward to the internal shapes.
*Don't throw away the rectangle piece or cut it up too much
Now you can begin to trace the design parts of the template onto the felt in the colours of your choosing. It's up to you wether you want to have the design on one or both of the sides. Trace and cut out the correct number of pieces for whatever you decide on. You might want to hold your felt pieces up to the template and trim any excess felt to make sure everything will fit together properly.
There are some parts of some of the designs that will work better in fabric paint then in felt due to their size. Don't bother cutting those pieces out of the felt.
Once you have all of your design pieces cut out, go back to your rectangle pieces and using the rectangle template, line the two up and lightly mark out where your design pieces will go. Then you can place the felt design onto the main rectangle and begin to glue or sew the pieces down. Do that for all of the pieces on one, or both of the rectangles. If there are any parts of your design that you want to fabric paint on, do that now as well.
Once you have all of the design on, take the two rectangles, line them up and pin them together right sides facing out. Then you can thread your needle with some embroidery floss in a complimentary colour to your design (we used all 6 threads). Knot one of the ends of the embroidery floss, and start in one of the top corners of the rectangle (the end that the 3DS will slide into) and begin to blanket stitch all the way around on the 3 sides. Once you get to the final side you can stop there, or you can stitch along either side to match the rest. Make sure you hold the side you're not stitching on back, so that you don't accidentally sew the two sides together.
You're finished! Now you have your own custom 3DS sleeve!
